John is speaking to the sons of light, telling us how to sustain our fellowship with God and Jesus the Messiah. He reveals a secret about God. He is light! John tells us what light is by telling us what it is not, darkness. This type of darkness is spiritual, not the darkness of night, but the result of not practicing the truth. Therefore, light is truth! 1 John 1:5
The word fellowship here is the greek word Koinonia meaning holding something in common. All His children bear His light within, but some children's light shine brighter than others. Our ability to reflect His light is conditioned and ongoing. It is conditional, for it requires you to believe His truth. It's ongoing and requires you to keep on walking in His truth. John 3:20-21; Ephesians 5:8-11
In light, there are degrees of luminosity. It is His will that your light shines brightly. Like David, we should want to know whether there is any sin, such as hidden iniquity of the heart, open rebellion, or lack of trust in God's ability to love and care for you. Whatever the sin, it is affecting your relationship and fellowship with God. Like David, ask God to search you! Are you spending time every day reading the Word of God? Do you commune with Him daily? Is the communication one sided or a monologue? How often are you submitting to His will sometimes, all the time, or not at all? Some of these are telltale signs that your light may have waned, shining less bright. Do you want God to restore your light's brightness, then ask Him to search you? When He shows you these areas, repent; turn back towards Him and away from whatever is hindering your relationship with Him. Psalms 119:105; 139:23-24; Matthew 5:14-16
There is a difference between being light and bearing light. Long ago, scientists believed that certain celestial bodies, such as the Earth and the moon, had their own light. As God began to open the knowledge of the heavens to them, they learned that these do not have light but reflect the light of the sun. Without the sun, our light source, nothing on Earth could exist. Likewise, God's children, the sons of light, reflect the light of His Son. You have no light of your own; apart from the Son, the light that came down from heaven, you can accomplish nothing. Acts 17:28; Ephesians 5:13
Choose to walk as sons of light; a bearer of the light of Christ. Also, to reflect God's light brightly by remaining in fellowship with Him. Romans 2:8-9
